What to Say When You Propose: Words, Examples and Tips
LUNEVYA RedaktionMany people fear their own words more than the answer. The good news: you do not need to give a speech. A few honest sentences are enough. Here is a simple structure you can use to prepare your words.
A simple three-part structure
- A look back: A specific moment that shows what you value in your partner.
- A feeling: What your time together means to you.
- The question: Clear, short and without detours.
Examples to adapt
Use these examples only as a template and replace them with your own details.
"When we met, I didn't yet know how much you would change my life. Everything is easier and more beautiful with you. I want to spend my time with you. Will you marry me?"
"You are the person who makes me feel at home, no matter where we are. I want that to stay that way. Will you be my wife?"
"I thought for a long time about how to say this. In the end it's simple: I love you and I want to grow old with you. Will you marry me?"
For a humorous proposal: one sentence that suits you both, such as a reference to a shared inside joke, before the question comes.
Tips against stage fright
- Practise the sentences out loud, but don't memorise them. Jot down three keywords instead of a whole text.
- Take a deep breath before the moment and speak slowly. Silence is allowed.
- Look your partner in the eyes, not at the ring.
- If you lose the thread, jump straight to the question. It is the most important part.
And if you would rather write?
A letter is a good alternative if words don't come easily. Hand it over at the place of the proposal, let your partner read it and then ask the question yourself.
What happens after the answer?
Put the ring on, take a moment for yourselves and plan who should hear the news first. A photo of the moment is worth a lot later. How to organise that is covered in the guide to planning a proposal.
Matching ideas and the ring to go with them
Collect ideas in our article Proposal Ideas. If you would rather not plan place, time and schedule alone, try the Proposal Planner. And for the moment itself: our engagement rings come with an IGI certificate.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a proposal last?
The proposal itself takes one to two minutes. It doesn't need to be longer.
Do you have to kneel when you propose?
No. It is a tradition, not a requirement. Do what suits you.
What do I say if I'm nervous?
Say so. "I'm nervous because this matters so much to me" is a good start.
